Circular No. MPC/151/07/ec Subject : CRIME PREVENTION ADVISORY – THEFT OF CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS Date : 13 December 2007 Contact : Evelyn Chung
Once again, the festive season is round the corner and is a vulnerable period for thefts. We would like to remind members to take extra precautions and measures to prevent thefts. There have been many reported cases of theft of construction equipment and materials. Such theft can occur at any construction site, site office or storage area. In these cases, culprit(s) have taken items such as copper cables, metal grilles, drills, cutters and circuit boards of excavators. The high price of metal may have triggered the rise in such thefts. This usually occurs when the items are left unattended or within premises that are not properly secured.
Advised by the Police, you can prevent your site from being the next target by doing the following : a) Deploy sufficient security officers/watchmen, caretakers and attendants to ensure security of your premises b) Ensure a coordinated security patrolling regime in your site especially over the weekends or long holidays c) Store all equipment and materials in prominent and secured storage areas with proper lighting d) If possible, secure all equipment and materials to permanent fixtures e) Secure your premises with good quality locking devices and perimeter fencing f) Light up the perimeter and other vulnerable areas during hours of darkness
We hope the above will help you to devise your own theft prevention strategy in line with the physical environment of your site.
