Advisory on the Haze Condition at Construction Sites

Singapore has been hit by haze once again, with the air quality in the unhealthy range last week. According to the National Environmental Agency (NEA), for the next few days, the weather in Singapore is expected to be generally dry except for a few brief showers. Dry weather is forecast over central and southern Sumatra, and the haze situation there is expected to persist. The prevailing winds are forecast to blow from the southeast or south, and Singapore may still experience slightly hazy conditions. (updated 15 Sep 2019)

SCAL would like to advise all construction firms to continually monitor the current haze condition through the NEA website http://www.haze.gov.sg/ and make necessary preparations such as, but not limited to, the following:

  • Conduct risk assessments to determine criteria for restricting outdoor work especially when the PSI level fall in the "unhealthy" and "very unhealthy" ranges of 101 to 300
  • Identify types of outdoor work to be reduced, minimized or avoided
  • Where appropriate, rotate workers’ duties indoors to prevent prolonged exposure to the haze
  • Implement haze communications system between employer and employees
  • Improve efficiency of air cleaning devices

For additional information on the measures for workplace safety and health protection in the event of haze, please refer to guidelines issued by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) at http://www.mom.gov.sg/haze/guidelines-on-protecting-employees-from-haze.
