Mr Kenneth Loo, SCAL President
Ladies and gentlemen
It is my pleasure to welcome all of you to this dinner celebration, dedicated to a notable historical figure, Lu Ban. I also consider it a privilege to be able to be the host to so many of our industry friends here tonight.
The Legacy of Lu Ban
Let me first speak about the legacy of Lu Ban. Lu Ban was born into a renowned family of carpenters and artisans in the State of Lu, the southern part of China. We recognise him as a Carpenter, Engineer, Philosopher, Inventor, Philanthropist, Military thinker, and a Statesman.
Earlier this year from May to August, there was an exhibition dedicated to Da Vinci and Luban held at Riverside Art Museum in Beijing. The exhibition displayed inventions in architecture and crafts from both the East and West. It also featured the technological achievements of Lu Ban.
It is evident from this that Lu Ban’s legacy still lives on. Much of what he did was recorded during his time, many of his inventions are in fact still being used to this day but in new and innovative ways.
Some of his inventions include a prototype of the modern bicycle, made entirely of wood with pedals and even gearing. His designs of improved chisels, saws, and many other woodworking tools are also just a minor show case of his continued legacy.
Lu Ban’s Philanthropic Spirit
In commemorating this legacy of Lu Ban each year, SCAL has been raising funds to help the underprivileged in our society. I am pleased to announce this year’s list of donors and recipients.
A total of $30,000 was raised for Nee Soon South CCC Community Development and Welfare Fund, with donations of $10,000 each from Straits Construction Pte Ltd and Woh Hup (Pte) Ltd, and $5,000 each from Lian Soon Construction Pte Ltd and Quek and Quek Civil Engineering Pte Ltd.
A total of $20,000 was also raised for students enrolled in 4 neighbouring schools in Bukit Merah. The schools were:
· Bukit Merah Secondary School
· Gan Eng Seng School
· New Town Primary School
· Queenstown Primary School
These were each sponsored with donations of $5,000 each from:
· Kimly Construction Pte Ltd
· Santarli Construction Pte Ltd
· Straits Construction Pte Ltd; and
· Wee Hur Construction Pte Ltd
Please join me in giving a warm applause to all our donors for their generous contributions.
Last but not least, I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the committee members of Lu Ban for their commitment throughout the year. Your support has been exemplary in the representation of Lu Ban’s philanthropic spirit.
Once again, I am delighted to be hosting this dinner and I wish you an enjoyable evening in the company of colleagues and friends. I look forward to Lu Ban Celebration next year with our new host, Mr Teo Yeow Soon, Director of Vigcon Construction Pte Ltd. Thank you and I hope you have an enjoyable evening.
