Distinguished guests

Ladies and gentlemen

Good Evening!

A warm welcome to SCAL’s Lu Ban Dinner Celebration 2018! Thank you for joining us this evening as we commemorate the birthday of Lu Ban, the founding father of builders.

This evening let me begin by extending my appreciation to Dr Lee Bee Wah, our guest of honour for the continuous support. We truly appreciate your presence.

SCAL’s initiatives/achievements for 2018

As we come to the end of another eventful year, it is only fitting that I share with you some of SCAL’s initiatives and events which have contributed to not just the construction industry but also to our community.

Celebrating our 80th Anniversary last year, we directed our focus to strengthen workplace safety and health, or WSH within the industry and to drive construction productivity among our members.

Continuing these efforts, SCAL organised 5 safety site visits, including management site walks this year to reinforce good safety and housekeeping practices among members.  As part of the Construction Safety Promotion Month in June, we held our annual Construction Safety, Health and Security Seminar and a joint conference on total WSH with Singapore Institution of Safety Officers, SISO to reach out to a greater pool of WSH professionals.

SCAL will also launch a new Safety Awards for the Singapore List of Trade Subcontractors, or SLOTS next April to encourage greater ownership of WSH and recognise subcontractors that have shown commitment and dedication in advocating WSH. Awards will be given out at our annual dinner in 2019.

On productivity, SCAL organised the 3rd Productivity and Innovation Awards, or PIA in conjunction with BuildTech Asia 2018. The PIA saw participating firms coming up with many practical solutions which had the potential for industry-wide adoptions to improve productivity.

As announced earlier this year, our SCAL Academy will be setting up a new Safety Training School to include experiential and blended learning. Do also look out for the new curriculum such as Design for Manufacturing and Assembly, or DfMA, virtual design and construction, or VDC, and integrated digital delivery, or IDD to prepare the industry for a future-ready workforce.

Corporate Social Responsibility

Year after year, our members have given us unwavering support in our philanthropic efforts.  Our annual initiatives include the Lunar New Year Celebration for the elderly, our Blood Donation Drive, Charity Golf Tournament, the Clean-A-Home Programme, and collaborating with the Building Construction Authority, or BCA to help revamp the premises of the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped, or SAVH.

This year, we also organised a Foreign Workers’ carnival in conjunction with labour day to show appreciation for over 2,000 foreign workers in the construction sector. The event saw over 23 construction firms sponsoring their workers to attend the carnival for food and games, interactive booths, entertainment acts including an instant photo booth session. I hope such initiatives will encourage more firms will play a more direct role in taking care their workers' welfare and wellbeing.

Tonight’s event is yet another testimony of our philanthropic spirit, drawing inspiration from the great Lu Ban. This year, a total of $30,000 was raised for Nee Soon South CCC Community Development and Welfare Fund, and another $20,000 to students enrolled at four neighbourhood schools.

The SCAL Lu Ban Bursary Awards grants bursaries to needy students from our member companies. This year, we have distributed a total of $12,600 to 18 students from Primary and Secondary schools as well as Junior Colleges.

I will leave the announcements of respective donors and recipients to our Lu Ban Host Jian Rong.
