Driving Sustainable Construction: Translating Research and Innovation into Real-World Applications

Being a vertically integrated civil engineering company with over five decades of experience in Singapore, Samwoh has been actively engaged in applied research for the built environment. Innovation and sustainability constitute the core ethos of the company. Over the years, we have been spearheading numerous pilot studies to turn industrial by-products and wastes into useful resources for construction applications. Our relentless efforts have successfully led to the acceptance of various recycled materials as alternatives to the conventional ones by the regulatory bodies with wide adoption by the industry.
This presentation will provide an insight into some of these sustainable materials and how we translate the laboratory findings into real-world implementations. We will also highlight some of the upcoming innovations which can contribute to the advancement of circularity and decarbonisation of our economy.

Dr Kelvin Lee

Dr. Lee obtained his PhD and Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the National University of Singapore. He leads research, pavement consultancy and innovation activities at Samwoh Innovation Centre Pte. Ltd. With over 20 years of experience, he has successfully delivered numerous research and consultancy projects involving road and airport pavements. His expertise spans pavement testing, evaluation and design, with projects undertaken in Singapore, Brunei, the Philippines, Cambodia, Seychelles, and other countries.
Throughout his career, Dr. Lee has led a wide range of initiatives focused on the development of innovative and sustainable construction materials, as well as the recycling and beneficial reuse of waste materials. These include construction and demolition waste, reclaimed asphalt pavement, scrap tires, municipal solid waste incineration bottom ash, Jurong Rock Cavern excavated rock, and plastic waste for construction applications. His contributions have helped facilitate the acceptance and adoption of various recycled materials by government authorities and industry stakeholders for use in road, airport pavement, and building construction projects.
In recognition of his significant contributions to sustainability, innovation, and the advancement of circular economy practices in the construction industry, Dr. Lee has received numerous local and international awards and accolades over the years. His work continues to drive the development of greener, more sustainable infrastructure solutions while supporting industry transformation and resource conservation.
